Role IT Apprentice

I joined Galldris two years ago, as a Level 3 IT Apprentice and I’m really pleased with the progress I’ve made. The company is really supporting me to achieve my potential and my aim is to gain a BSc in IT – all achieved through the apprenticeship route.

I’m right at the heart of a very busy IT department that serves both head office and all our construction sites. So it’s fast paced and challenging. The experience I’ve gained and the key skills learnt, have given me a massive head start in the field of IT.

My Galldris mentor has been encouraging every step of the way and always treats me as a valued member of the team – no matter how many annoying questions I ask!

I thoroughly enjoy my role with Galldris. I’d definitely recommend starting your career with an apprenticeship, as you earn while you learn and you are trained in the all of the skills employers are crying out for.

Role Trainee QS

I joined Galldris as a Trainee QS, after a career change. As part of my training programme, I attend day release classes each week at the Anglia Ruskin University, and the other days I am based on site working on one of Galldris’s largest projects. This combination gives me the opportunity to apply the theory I acquire from University to my work on site.

I would highly recommend this route of studying because you gain first-hand knowledge of how the industry works and you earn whilst you are studying. There is always someone on hand to support and show me how things are done. I have been allocated a mentor who is there to answer questions about techniques, terminology or anything related to the industry. The whole experience is rewarding for my long-term career and my future within the construction trade.

Heenaba Mahida

Role Graduate Assistant Surveyor

I am currently working between Galldris’s Pre-Construction and Surveying Departments. This has given me the chance to prepare tenders and contract documents, which has enabled me to develop a good knowledge of the pre-construction stage of the process. I also support the commercial side of the business preparing cost value reconciliations and I assist with pricing and agreeing project variations. I also accompany some of the more senior surveyors on site visits.

The skills that I believe are essential to my role are the ability to work under pressure and prioritise, due to strict deadlines in submitting tenders. You need to have a logical and innovative approach to problem solving, coupled with strong numeracy and financial management skills. Being a good team player is also important.
